Ways to Cure Insomnia and Get Sound Sleep

Insomnia is a widespread sleeping disorder that affects people of all age groups. A person suffering from insomnia finds it difficult to either fall asleep or maintain a sound sleep for long time. This sleeping disorder is a symptom of several diseases. Based on the duration for which it stays, this problem can be classified as transient insomnia, acute insomnia and chronic insomnia. People who suffer from transient insomnia experience difficulty in sleeping for a few days mainly because of changes in their sleeping habits. Acute insomnia stays for a few weeks or months, whereas chronic insomnia lasts for years.

Causes of Insomnia

There are several factors that can result in insomnia. Tension related to family life, financial problems, work pressure, health, and demise of a beloved one are the most common reasons behind insomnia. Other causes include fear, hyperthyroidism, neurological disorders, and unpleasant surroundings. Another cause of insomnia is the use of prescription drugs that contain stimulating ingredients like caffeine and herbs.

Ways to Cure Insomnia

Insomnia can be treated in many ways like medications, therapies, exercise, etc. Some good methods to cure insomnia are discussed below.

Relaxation Techniques

Relaxation techniques can be helpful in curing insomnia, especially when stress is the main reason for this disorder. Meditation, yoga exercises, and deep breathing significantly reduce stress levels and improve sleep. Meditating for just about 15 minutes before you go to bed can relax your mind and body. Mental and physical relaxation always promotes good sleep.

Exercise Regularly

Exercising regularly is one of the best remedy for insomnia. Exercising and being more active for the whole day can make you feel tired at night and allow you to fall asleep immediately after going to bed.

Magnesium Diet

Magnesium deficiency is known to trigger insomnia in many people. In such cases, eating a diet that is high in magnesium can promote better sleep.

Cognitive Behavior Therapy

Cognitive behavior therapy tries to develop good sleeping habits in people suffering from insomnia. Cognitive behavior therapy is a better and safer insomnia cure than medications.

Sleep Restriction Treatment

Many a times, people go to bed too early and fail to fall asleep for a long time. Sleep restriction treatment involves going to bed a bit late than usual and waking up earlier than the daily routine. Following this practice over a period of time can help to develop a normal sleep pattern.

Pre-Sleeping Activities

If you find it hard to fall asleep soon after going to bed, then it is a good idea to indulge in activities like listening to calm music or reading a book. Ensure that you don’t select a book based on action or horror story as it can make it even more difficult for you to fall asleep.

Avoid Caffeine Intake before Bedtime

Being a stimulant, caffeine ruins your sleep. Hence, it is always advised to avoid having chocolate or coffee before your bedtime.

Insomnia can lead to the development of some mild and severe health problems. Sleepless nights cause a person to feel tired and irritable, thereby affecting the productivity and also taking the interest away from daily activities. Many people who suffer from this sleeping disorder fall prey to alcoholism and other harmful addictions, which only goes on to complicate the existing problem. Therefore, it is necessary to take measures to treat insomnia early enough.
